Introducing the Single Vineyard Range

Introducing the Single Vineyard Range

Evans & Tate wine has been made from Margaret River fruit since 1974, with Senior Winemaker Matt Byrne leading the Evans & Tate team since 2001. His extensive knowledge of the region, and Evans & Tate wines, has been paramount in shaping the winery into what it is today – one of Margaret River's most highly-awarded wineries.

In 2018 Matt was inspired by what he viewed as "the greatest vintage he has ever experienced in Margaret River". This led to his decision to showcase some of the best vineyard sites across the region through the Evans & Tate Single Vineyard range. The range currently includes four wines: 2021 Single Vineyard Chardonnay, 2020 Single Vineyard Shiraz Cabernet, 2019 Single Vineyard Cabernets and 2022 Single Vineyard Malbec.

Matt’s approach to the Single Vineyard range is to “allow vineyard character to sing”. His winemaking ethos reflects this by taking a minimalistic, hands-off approach to really showcase site specific varietal character in each wine.

Read on for Senior Winemaker Matt Byrne’s description of the current limited release wines in the Single Vineyard range.

Evans & Tate 2021 Single Vineyard Chardonnay

New Release

"The cooler 2021 vintage is viewed as exceptional for Chardonnay and has produced an elegant wine of the highest quality with character distinct to only Ellens Ridge Vineyard.

Ellens Ridge Chardonnay is a powerful wine but with a long, linear shape on the palate that carries flavour to an extraordinary length and finishes with incredibly refreshing acidity. This strength of fruit lays the foundation for winemaking to contribute nuances of complexity through the use of wild yeast, barrel fermentation (with the inclusion of cloudy juice prior to the onset of ferment), and a touch of natural MLF to add another layer of intrigue – all while showcasing and ensuring the unique fruit profile of Ellens Ridge Chardonnay is at the forefront of the wine. A true Single Vineyard reflection."

Evans & Tate 2020 Single Vineyard Shiraz Cabernet

1 Trophy

"From the start this is a captivating blend. Scented notes of violets and red berry strike immediately. The palate is a sumptuous feast of fruit with a complex savoury dark chocolate addition. Retains a smooth and refined palate structure. The supple completeness of the middle palate is a feature, with those fine sinewy tannins adding definition and structure."

Evans & Tate 2019 Single Vineyard Cabernets

"Pretty, perfumed and powerful. That’s this blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a dollop of Malbec. It’s such a beautifully presented, medium weight wine offering fragrance on the nose and delicacy yet power on the palate. Style and elegance personified."

Evans & Tate 2022 Single Vineyard Malbec

1 Gold Medal

Margaret River is quickly being recognised as a natural home for Malbec to thrive in and the Single Vineyard Malbec is a world-class example of this native French variety.

2022 was an exceptional vintage in Margaret River and pristine Malbec fruit was sourced from the family-run Carter Road Vineyard in the heart of Wilyabrup, producing a wine that is intense yet delicate. The palate is juicy, with bright red fruits and a lovely savoury spice. This is a stunning wine showcasing the bright future of single varietal Malbec in Margaret River.
